Fatwa number ( 2273 )
Q: And its content is: Is it permissible for a woman to see her husband when he dies, or is it forbidden for her to see him? And is she allowed to wash him if no one else is available to wash him?
A: It is permissible for a woman to see her husband when he dies, and to wash him, according to the correct opinion of the scholars regarding the ruling on each of the spouses washing the other after death, even if someone other than them is available to wash him. This is based on the statement of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): narrated by Abu Dawud, and because Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) instructed that his wife Asma bint Umayyis wash him, and she did so. And because Abu Musa’s wife Umm Abdullah washed him. It is also permissible for a man to wash his wife when she dies, according to the correct opinion of the scholars; this is based on what Ibn al-Mundhir narrated that Ali ibn Abi Talib washed Fatima (may Allah be pleased with them both) after her death. This became well-known among the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) and they did not object to it, so it became a consensus.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
