The fourth question of Fatwa number ( 16744 )
Q 4: Is it permissible for a person to wash his mother or daughter upon her death if he cannot find a woman who knows the ruling on washing the deceased? We ask for your guidance.
A 4: Washing the deceased is an obligatory act in the Shari'ah, but a man is not washed except by a man, and a woman is not washed except by a woman, with the exception of spouses. It is permissible for a man to wash his wife, and it is permissible for a wife to wash her husband, based on the hadith of A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her): , narrated by Ahmad and others. Also, because Asma' bint Umayyis (may Allah be pleased with her) washed her husband Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) by his bequest, and likewise Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) was washed by her husband Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
