Recording Knowledge
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 1374 )
Q: A man bought a recorder to record what benefits him in his life; such as Qur'an, Prophetic hadiths, and sermons and lectures delivered by teachers and students at the school weekly; so that he may benefit from them. He does not record songs, entertainment, or anything forbidden. He takes care of this recorder and its tapes, does not record anything else with it, and no one messes with the tapes. What is the ruling on this?
A: If the matter is as described, regarding the recording and preserving the recorder and tapes from the meddling of others; then that is permissible, and it may even be required
to do so; if it helps in the benefit of understanding the religion and acquiring beneficial knowledge; because means have the ruling of their ends. The fact that the type of recorders is used by many for various kinds of evil does not prevent you from using it for good only. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
