Fatwa Number ( 2176 )
Q: When my monthly period comes, it lasts nine days one time and ten days another. When I become pure and perform my household duties, it returns to me again in intermittent intervals. I am confused by it, so please guide me: what is the duration of the monthly period? And if the period returns to me after the prescribed duration, is it permissible for me to fast, pray, and go to the Sacred Precinct for 'Umrah? And is it permissible to use pills to stop the period in the month of Ramadan? Is this forbidden or permissible?
A: All praise is due to Allah alone, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger, his family, and his Companions. And after that: First: The duration of menstruation for you is the period in which it is your custom for menstruation to come, which is ten days or nine. So if the blood stops after nine or ten days, take a bath, pray, fast, and perform tawaf around the Ka'bah in Hajj, 'Umrah, or voluntarily, and it becomes permissible for your husband to have intercourse with you. And whatever blood returns to you after the customary period, whether due to performing work or another emergency, is not menstrual blood, but rather blood of illness and corruption. It does not prevent you from prayer, fasting, tawaf, or similar acts of devotion. Rather, wash it off yourself, just as you would with other
impurities, then perform wudu' for every prayer, and pray and perform tawaf around the Ka'bah and recite the Qur'an. Second: It is permissible for you to use pills to prevent the period in the month of Ramadan, provided that using them does not harm your general health, does not cause infertility, and does not cause disturbance in the monthly period. Indeed, the pills may lead to continuous bleeding, otherwise it is forbidden. This is known by asking the people of expertise from the skilled, trustworthy doctors. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
