It is well known that students are required to memorize a portion of the Book of Allah the Exalted

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : He says: O esteemed Shaykh, it is well known that students are required to memorize a portion of the Book of Allah the Exalted.

The Shaykh : That?

The questioner : Students are required to memorize a portion of the Book of Allah the Exalted. If the second year comes and we have forgotten some of the surahs prescribed for memorization in the previous term, we have forgotten some of the prescribed surahs.

The Shaykh : What?

The questioner : We have forgotten.

The Shaykh : We have forgotten?

The questioner : We have forgotten some of the surahs prescribed in the previous term. Is it forbidden for a person to forget these prescribed surahs?

The Shaykh : Is it?

The questioner : Is it forbidden for a person to forget these prescribed surahs?

The Shaykh : Yes. Let it be known that when Allah the Exalted bestows upon a person the grace of memorizing a portion of His Book, it is one of the great blessings that a person should not neglect. A hadith has come with a severe warning for whoever forgets something he had memorized from the Book of Allah, but this refers to one who forgets it by turning away from it and being indifferent to it. As for one who forgets it because he is occupied with earning a livelihood for himself and his children, or because he is occupied with other lessons if he is a student, there is no sin upon him, because he is not considered to have abandoned it intentionally. And Allah the Exalted said:
Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. رَبَّنَا لا تُؤَاخِذْنَا إِنْ نَسِينَا أَوْ أَخْطَأْنَا
[Al-Baqarah 2:286]
So I hope that Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, does not hold these people sinful. However, I urge them to review what they have memorized from the Book of Allah, as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded, saying:
Commit yourself to the Qur'an, for by Him in whose Hand is my soul, it is surely more prone to break away than a camel in its bind. تعاهدوا القرآن، فوالذي نفسي بيده لهو أشد تفصياً من الإبل في عقلها
Sahih al-Bukhari 5033
Yes.
