The Ruling on Forgetting the Qur'an

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner: Your Eminence, this is a questioner from Sudan. He says: The first question: We found, or we read, in Sahih al-Bukhari this hadith, which is part of the hadith of Samurah ibn Jundub regarding the vision of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in which he saw something astonishing. The point of this hadith is: (the man who rejects the Qur'an, and the angels split his head with stones). Does this apply to everyone who memorized the Qur'an and then forgot it, regardless of the differences, even if the reason was being occupied with studying Islamic jurisprudence, calling people to Allah, and teaching people? Please clarify to us the actual meaning intended?
May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and peace upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance. As for what follows:
The hadith mentioned, according to the scholars, refers to the one who memorizes the Qur'an, or learns the Qur'an, but does not act upon it; rather, his deeds contradict what the Qur'an indicates, so the Qur'an becomes a proof against him. As for merely forgetting what he has memorized, there is no blame on him for the forgetting. If he forgets some verses, or some surahs, there is no blame. However, it is a recommended practice (sunnah) for the believer to strive to memorize the Qur'an and to recite it frequently, because of the great good in it, as Allah the Exalted said:
Indeed, this Qur'an guides to that which is most suitableإِنَّ هَذَا الْقُرْآنَ يَهْدِي لِلَّتِي هِيَ أَقْوَمُ

[Sad: 29]. But the one who reads it and does not act upon it, it becomes a proof against him, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

The presenter: May Allah reward you.
