The Obligatory and the Recommended

The third question of Fatwa No. ( 6315 )
Q 3: People among us distinguish between the Sunnah and the obligatory, and say that the threat of punishment applies only to the obligatory and the emphasized Sunnah. I believe that everything Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) brought and made clear to his Ummah is obligatory for them to follow, and whoever does not do so has disliked what Muhammad brought. For example: growing the beard; it was brought by
Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Is it established that he shaved it? Is shaving it evidence of disliking what Muhammad brought? And does the one who does it fall under the same verse?
A 3: Praise be to Allah alone, and blessings and peace be upon His Messenger, his family, and his Companions. As for what follows: The obligatory is that for which its doer is rewarded and its leaver deserves punishment. The Sunnah (recommended) is that for which its doer is rewarded and its leaver is not punished. Leaving the Sunnah does not necessarily imply disliking it. As for shaving the beard or cutting it, it is forbidden; based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): . This does not necessarily imply disliking what the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) brought, just as one who is undutiful to his parents and one who commits unlawful sexual intercourse are sinners, and their sins do not necessarily imply that they dislike what the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) brought; because sins have many causes other than disliking what the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) brought. For this reason, the sinner is not declared a disbeliever merely for his sin according to the people of the Sunnah and the community , in contrast to the Khawarij . And success is from Allah, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
