Fatwa number ( 6612 ):
Q: Who is the father of our master Ibrahim (peace be upon him)? Because I have heard some scholars say that Azar is not the father of Ibrahim who bore him, but rather the brother of his father, and they have brought evidence from the Qur'an and the hadith in which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ; and therefore they said that Azar is not the father of Ibrahim ; because Ibrahim is among the ancestors of the Messenger, and how could his father be a disbeliever? For this reason, they said that Azar is not the father of Ibrahim . As for me and some of my brothers, who are students, we also heard from another scholar say that Azar is the father of Ibrahim who bore him, and he said that there is a verse in the Qur'an indicating this, which is: [Al-An'am 6:74] . Therefore, we hope for a clear explanation from you to reassure our hearts, as we are students?
A: The truth is what the second scholar mentioned, namely that Azar is the father of Ibrahim; based on the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Al-An'am 6:74] , and this is a clear, decisive text that does not require independent legal reasoning, and the Imam preferred
that position: Ibn Jarir and Ibn Kathir . As for the hadith, al-Suyuti mentioned it in [al-Jami' al-Saghir] from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: It was narrated by al-Tabarani in [al-Musnad al-Awsat] and Ibn 'Adi , and al-Haythami said: In it is Muhammad ibn Ja'far ibn Muhammad , whom al-Hakim authenticated, and he has spoken about him, and the rest of its narrators are trustworthy. So the hadith only indicates the purity of his lineage (peace and blessings be upon him), and it did not address the disbelief or Islam of his ancestors, and the disbelief of Azar does not necessitate that his marriage was unlawful, and even assuming the validity of the mentioned hadith, the fact that Azar was a disbeliever does not necessitate that his marriage was unlawful. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
