The Lawfulness of Seeking Help and Calling for Aid from Other Than Allah
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The third question of Fatwa No. ( 7308 ):
Q3: The proponents of Sufism say that they seek help and call for aid from righteous servants figuratively, while Allah the Mighty and Majestic is the one truly sought for help in reality. How do you refute these people? Then they say that their proof for seeking help from the righteous is:[Al-Anfal 8:17] ... to the end of the noble verse. This is their proof, so how do you refute this?
A3: First: Seeking help and calling for aid from other than Allah among the dead
and the absent, idols, and the like is shirk (associating partners with Allah) with Allah the Mighty and Majestic. Likewise, calling for aid and seeking help from other than Allah among the living in matters that only Allah is capable of is major shirk that takes one out of the religion of Islam. Second: Citing the verse:[Al-Anfal 8:17] as proof for the lawfulness of seeking help and calling for aid from other than Allah is invalid reasoning. For its meaning is: "And it was not you who threw when you threw, but it was Allah who threw." It refers to the fact that you did not strike the eyes of the disbelievers at the Battle of Badr , despite their multitude and their spread across the battlefield, with the pebbles you threw at them, given your weakness and the small amount of pebbles in your hand. Rather, it was Allah the Exalted who directed them to them, striking all their eyes by His power, Glorified is He. So there is no calling for aid from other than Allah in the verse; rather, it contains taking the means, even if weak, which is throwing pebbles, along with supplication to Allah and turning to Him. So the results were great by the grace of Allah and His power. And along with throwing the pebbles, there was also the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) supplication against them and his seeking victory from Allah alone over his enemies, not supplication to the righteous. And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
