Seeking the help of the jinn or the angels and calling upon them for aid
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q5: Is it permissible for a Muslim to write the spiritual names (of the jinn or the angels) or the beautiful names of Allah or other of the protective amulets and invocations well-known among spiritual scholars, with the intention of protecting the body from the evil of the jinn, Satan, and sorcery?
A5: Seeking the help of the jinn or the angels and calling upon them for aid to ward off harm or bring about benefit, or to seek protection from the evil of the jinn, is major shirk (associating partners with Allah) that takes one out of the religion
of Islam—may Allah protect us from it—whether that is done by calling out to them, or by writing their names and hanging them as an amulet, or by washing with them and drinking the water, or the like, if one believes that the amulet or the washing brings him benefit or wards off harm from him apart from Allah. As for writing the names of Allah the Exalted and hanging them as an amulet, some of the Salaf (the earliest generations) permitted it, while some disliked it; due to the general prohibition of amulets and the consideration that hanging them is a means to hanging other shirky amulets; and because hanging them exposes them to dirt and filth, which is a form of disrespect for them. This is the correct view. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
