The fifth question of Fatwa No. ( 5553 ):
Q5: Is it permissible to seek aid from the prophets, the awliya (close friends of Allah), and the righteous, whether in their lifetimes or after their deaths, in removing harm and bringing about good, and to seek nearness to Allah through them in both states for fulfilling needs and desires? Or is it not permissible?
A5: As for seeking aid from the dead, whether prophets or others, it is not permissible; rather, it is major shirk (associating partners with Allah). As for seeking aid from a living person who is present, and seeking aid from him in what he is capable of doing, there is no harm; due to the saying of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) in the story of Musa:[Al-Qasas 28:15] . As for seeking nearness to Allah through the living
or the dead, whether prophets or others, by their selves, their status, or their right, it is not permissible; rather, it is a religious innovation (bid'ah) and a means to shirk (associating partners with Allah). And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
