The Pillars of Islam, Its Obligations, and Its Recommended Practices

Q12: The questioner says: Some people say that whoever performs the five pillars of Islam becomes merely a Muslim? What is your guidance, O Shaykh?
A12: Islam has many actions; however, these are the pillars of Islam. Otherwise, Islam is everything that Allah has commanded to be done and everything He has forbidden to be avoided; all of it is part of Islam. But some of it consists of pillars, some of it consists of obligations and duties, and some of it consists of recommended practices. Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) says:[Al-Baqarah 2:208], meaning: Enter into Islam in its entirety, and do not take some of it and leave some of it while you are able. Otherwise, Islam encompasses all good. And when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih Muslim 41, this is also part of Islam.

O you who have believed, enter into Islam completely [and perfectly] and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.
A Muslim is he from whose hand and tongue the Muslims are safe.
