The ruling on one who calls upon other than Allah and seeks aid from them

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner asks again, saying: What is your opinion of one who declares as a disbeliever a person who prays, fasts, performs the obligatory acts, and performs Hajj, but who calls upon other than Allah, or seeks help from other than Allah, or swears by other than Allah?
The answer: The foundation of Islam is the oneness of Allah (tawhid) and singling Him out for worship. This is the meaning of the testimony: "There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." This is the root of the religion and the foundation of the faith, and it is the first pillar of the pillars of Islam, before prayer, fasting, and zakah. The first pillar is the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, based on knowledge, action, truthfulness, sincerity, love, and acceptance of the truth.
If he worships Allah alone, his prayer, fasting, Hajj, and zakah are valid.
If he calls upon the dead and seeks aid from the dead, his deeds are invalid, and he becomes one who associates partners with Allah (mushrik). We seek refuge in Allah.
Whoever calls upon the dead, seeks aid from them, makes vows to them, and says, "Help, help! O my master so-and-so! Or O my master so-and-so!" seeking from the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), or from al-Margani, or from al-Husayn, or from al-Badawi, or from Shaykh 'Abd al-Qadir, or from others, this is major shirk (associating partners with Allah). Because Allah the Exalted says:
so do not invoke with Allah anyone.
[al-Jinn: 18]. And He says the Exalted:
And do not invoke besides Allah that which neither benefits you nor harms you, for if you did, then indeed you would be of the wrongdoers.'"وَلا تَدْعُ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ مَا لا يَنْفَعُكَ وَلا يَضُرُّكَ فَإِنْ فَعَلْتَ فَإِنَّكَ إِذًا مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ
[Yunus: 106], meaning: the polytheists.
And He says the Exalted:
That is Allah, your Lord; to Him belongs sovereignty. And those whom you invoke other than Him do not possess [as much as] the membrane of a date seed. (14) If you invoke them, they do not hear your supplication; and if they heard, they would not respond to you. And on the Day of Resurrection they will deny your association.
[Fatir: 14]. He named it shirk; He named their calling upon Him as shirk with Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: :
And whoever invokes besides Allah another deity for which he has no proof - then his account is only with his Lord. Indeed, the disbelievers will not succeed.
[al-Mu'minun: 117]. So He named them disbelievers (kuffar) by their calling. The one who is called upon other than Allah is called a god (ilah) and a rival (nidd). So whoever calls upon an idol, or a close friend of Allah (wali), or a prophet, or the moon, or a star, or something else, or a jinni, alongside Allah, has made it a rival to Allah and made it a god alongside Allah. This act is major shirk, and with it prayer, fasting, zakah, Hajj, and other things are invalidated. Allah the Exalted said in His great Book:
And it was already revealed to you and to those before you that if you should associate [anything] with Allah, your work would surely become worthless, and you would surely be among the losers."وَلَقَدْ أُوحِيَ إِلَيْكَ وَإِلَى الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِكَ لَئِنْ أَشْرَكْتَ لَيَحْبَطَنَّ عَمَلُكَ وَلَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ
[al-Zumar: 65]. He is addressing His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who is protected from this, but to let the Ummah know that this matter is great. And He said, Exalted and Majestic is He:
But if they had associated others with Allah, then worthless for them would be whatever they were doing.
[al-An'am: 88]. And He said the Exalted:
Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills
[al-Nisa: 48]. So shirk is not forgiven for one who dies upon it.
It is obligatory to be cautious of this matter: calling upon the dead, seeking aid from the dead, or from idols, trees, and stones, and asking them for help. All of this is shirk with Allah, and it invalidates deeds.
It is obligatory to hasten to repent from this matter and to be cautious of it, with a sincere resolve not to return to it in one's actions. With this, his Islam becomes valid. As long as he worships graves and the dead, seeks aid from them, and makes vows to them, he has invalidated the foundation of his Islam; he has invalidated the testimony. It is like one who performs ablution (wudu') and then becomes ritually impure. If a person performs wudu' and then urine or wind comes out of him, his wudu' is invalidated. So it is like the one who says, "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah," and then calls upon the dead, seeks aid from the dead, or from idols or jinn, and makes vows to them; he has invalidated his tawhid, just as he invalidated his purity with wind or urine.
And likewise, if he says, "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah," and then says after that, "Musaylimah is a prophet," Musaylimah the Liar, saying that he is a prophet; or if he says, "Al-Aswad al-'Ansi is a prophet"; or if he says, "Tulayhah al-Asadi is a prophet"; or if he says, "So-and-so or so-and-so is among those who claimed prophethood after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)," he becomes a disbeliever (kafir), even if he says, "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah," and even if he says, "I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." Because he has lied to Allah in His statement about Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) (and the Seal of the Prophets):
Muhammad is not the father of [any] one of your men, but [he is] the Messenger of Allah and last of the prophetsمَا كَانَ مُحَمَّدٌ أَبَا أَحَدٍ مِنْ رِجَالِكُمْ وَلَكِنْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَخَاتَمَ النَّبِيِّينَ
[al-Ahzab: 40].
And likewise, if he says, "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah," and then says, "Prayer is not obligatory," he has committed disbelief (kufr). Even if he says, "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah," or if he intentionally leaves off prayer, according to the correct opinion, he has committed disbelief as well. Or if he says, "Zakah is not obligatory," or "Fasting Ramadan is not obligatory," even if he fasts, or if he says, "Hajj is not obligatory with the ability to perform it," he has committed disbelief even if he performed Hajj; because he has lied to Allah and His Messenger.
And likewise, if a person says, "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah," and prays, fasts, and gives charity, but he insults the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), or insults Allah, or insults Islam, he has committed disbelief with this insult. This testimony, this fasting, and this prayer do not benefit him; because he has committed one of the nullifiers of Islam.
So it is necessary for the Muslim, and for the preservation of Islam in him, to stay away from the nullifiers of Islam, and from the causes of apostasy (riddah). And likewise, if a person testifies that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and prays, fasts, pays zakah, and performs Hajj, but he is disrespectful to the mushaf (written copy of the Qur'an), treading on it with his foot, or sitting on it in disrespect, or smearing it with impurity, he has committed disbelief by consensus (ijma') due to his action with the mushaf; because this indicates taking the words of Allah lightly, and insulting Allah by insulting His words. So he is a disbeliever in the view of all scholars, even if he says, "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah," and even if he prays, pays zakah, fasts, and performs Hajj.
So the Muslim should be alert to these matters, and that Islam remains only with safety from the nullifiers of Islam, and with staying away from what nullifies Islam.
We ask Allah for guidance and well-being for everyone.
The presenter: May Allah reward you.
