Claiming Knowledge of the Unseen

Machine translationRead the Arabic original

The first question of Fatwa No. ( 8071 ):

Q1: We have a woman who is called "The Unseen One." If the reason for her being given this name is her claim to knowledge of the unseen, what is the ruling?
A1: Claiming knowledge of the unseen is disbelief. Allah the Exalted said:
Say, "None in the heavens and earth knows the unseen except Allahقُلْ لاَ يَعْلَمُ مَنْ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأَرْضِ الْغَيْبَ إِلا اللَّهُ
[An-Naml 27:65]
She should change her name to a good one, such as Fatimah or Aishah or the like, so that the label of knowing the unseen is removed from her. In addition, she must repent to Allah with sincere repentance from her claim of knowledge of the unseen, or from her practice of what Allah has forbidden her, such as fortune-telling, astrology, and other things that those who claim knowledge of the unseen engage in. If she does not repent, it is obligatory to refer her to the authority in the country where she resides so that she may be punished with what she deserves, and so that people may be warned against her actions and against believing her. And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
