Photography and Keeping Photographs
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The third question of Fatwa No. ( 1978 ):
Q3: The content is that a discussion took place among the brothers regarding the ruling on photography and keeping photographs, and the discussion did not reach a conclusion. What is the ruling on photography and keeping these photographs?
A3: Photography of living beings, whether human or animal, and keeping these photographs is forbidden (haram), indeed it is among the major sins; due to the authentic hadiths reported on this matter that include severe warnings and threaten with painful punishment for those who create these images and those who possess them, and due to the fact that it involves imitating Allah in His creation of living beings, and because it may be a means to shirk (associating partners with Allah), such as images of great men and righteous people, or a door to fitnah (trial, discord or temptation), such as images of beautiful women, actors, actresses, and those who are naked while clothed. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
