Image-making in Islam

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 2036 ):
Q1: What is the ruling on image-making in Islam?
A1: The original ruling regarding the depiction of anything possessing a soul, whether human or other animals, is that it is forbidden, whether the images are three-dimensional, drawings on paper, cloth, walls, or the like, or photographic images. This is based on what is established in authentic hadiths prohibiting this and threatening its doer with painful punishment. It is also forbidden because it is known in its kind to be a means to shirk (associating partners with Allah) through standing before them, submitting to them, seeking nearness to them, and venerating them in a manner that befits only Allah the Exalted. Furthermore, it involves imitating the creation of Allah, and some of it contains fitnah (trial, discord or temptation), such as images of actresses, naked women, those called beauty queens, and the like. Among the hadiths that came regarding its prohibition, and that it is among the major sins, is the hadith of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The makers of these images will be punished on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be said to them: 'Bring to life that which you have created.'إن الذين يصنعون هذه الصور يعذبون يوم القيامة، ويقال لهم: أحيوا ما خلقتم
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5362Sahih (Darussalam)
It was narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim , and the hadith of 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
Those who will receive the most severe punishment from Allah on the Day of Resurrection will be painters (of living objects).إن أشد الناس عذابًا يوم القيامة المصورون
Riyad as-Salihin 1682

It was narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim , and the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
The Almighty Allah said: 'Who is more an oppressor than him who goes to create like My creation? Let him make an ant or a grain of corn or a grain of barleyقال الله تعالى: ومن أظلم ممن ذهب يخلق كخلقي فليخلقوا ذرة أو ليخلقوا حبة أو ليخلقوا شعيرة
Riyad as-Salihin 1683
It was narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim , and the hadith of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) who said:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came from a journey, and I had covered my niche with a curtain in which were images. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw it, his face changed color, and he said: O 'A'ishah, the most severely punished people by Allah on the Day of Resurrection are those who imitate the creation of Allah. We tore it and made from it a cushion or two cushionsقدم رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم من سفر وقد سترت سهوة لي بقرام فيه تماثيل، فلما رآه رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم تلون وجهه، وقال: يا عائشة، أشد الناس عذابًا عند الله يوم القيامة الذين يضاهئون بخلق الله فقطعناه فجعلنا منه وسادة أو وسادتين
It was narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim , - al-Qiram: the curtain, and al-Suhwah: the niche or window in the wall - and the hadith of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
He who painted pictures in the world would be compelled to breathe soul in them on the Day of Resurrection, but he would not be able to breathe soul (in them).من صور صورة في الدنيا كلف أن ينفخ فيها الروح يوم القيامة، وليس بنافخ
Sahih Muslim 2110b
It was narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim , and his hadith also from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) who said:
Everyone who makes representations of things will go to hell, and for every representation he has made there will be produced a soul which will punish him in jahannam.كل مصور في النار يجعل له بكل صورة صورها نفسًا فتعذبه في جهنم
Mishkat al-Masabih 4498
, said Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): If you must do it, then make trees and that which has no soul. It was narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim . The generality of these hadiths indicates the prohibition of depicting anything possessing a soul absolutely. As for that which has no soul, such as trees, seas, mountains, and the like, it is permissible to depict them, as mentioned by Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), and it is not known that any of the Companions objected to him regarding this. This is also based on what is understood from his saying in the hadiths of threat: "Bring to life what you have created," and his saying in them: "He will be commanded to breathe life into it, but he will not be able to do so." And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
