Photographing the husband and wife and their two families at the wedding ceremony

Fatwa number ( 4636 ):
Q: Here is my statement: People have agreed upon this custom, which we have become accustomed to recently, from approximately the year 1390 AH, that the wedding ceremony is arranged with the procession of the husband and wife, and many photos are taken of them. The families of the husband and wife are photographed, and these photos are distributed among relatives
and friends with the intention of honoring them. This custom is such that the wedding is not considered valid without it, and it is rare to find one in a hundred, or you may not find any at all. Sound reason rejects this custom. What is the opinion of the religion? Please inform us, may Allah reward you, on the radio or in the pages of the newspaper or the Da'wah magazine. If it is in the pages of the magazine, it will be a more eloquent argument standing for the prohibition or permissibility. May Allah preserve you.
A: What you mentioned regarding photographing the husband and wife and their two families at the wedding ceremony is forbidden, and it is one of the bad customs of weddings; this is because photographing beings with souls is absolutely forbidden and is among the major sins. The principle regarding photographing anything with a soul, from humans and other animals, is that it is forbidden, whether the image is three-dimensional or drawings on paper, cloth, walls, or the like, or whether they are photographic images. This is because it is established in the authentic hadiths from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) the prohibition of that, the cursing of its doer, and the warning of him with painful punishment. Also, because it is known in its kind to be a means to shirk (associating partners with Allah) by standing before them, submitting to them, seeking nearness to them, and magnifying them with a magnification that is not fitting except for Allah the Exalted. Also, because of what is in them of imitating the creation of Allah, and because of what is in some of them of fitnah (trial, discord or temptation), such as images of actresses and naked women, and those who are called queens of beauty and the like. Among the hadiths that came regarding its prohibition and indicated that it is among the major sins is the hadith of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5362Sahih (Darussalam) Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim , and the hadith of 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Riyad as-Salihin 1682 Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim , and the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: Riyad as-Salihin 1683 Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim , and the hadith of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) who said: Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim - al-Qiram: the curtain, al-Suhwah: the niche or window in the wall - and the hadith of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Sahih Muslim 2110b Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim , and his hadith also from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: Mishkat al-Masabih 4498. Said Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): Mishkat al-Masabih 4498 Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim , and the hadith of Abu Juhayfah from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Sahih al-Bukhari 2086 Narrated by the Imam al-Bukhari in his Sahih,
so the generality of these hadiths indicates the prohibition of photographing anything with a soul absolutely. As for what has no soul, such as trees, seas, mountains, and the like, it is permissible to photograph them, as mentioned by Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), and it is not known that any of the Companions denied it to him. This is based on what is understood from his saying in the hadiths of warning:, and his saying in them: Riyad as-Salihin 1544. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

Those who will receive the most severe punishment from Allah on the Day of Resurrection will be painters (of living objects).

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came from a journey, and I had covered my niche with a curtain in which there were images. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw it, his face changed color, and he said: O 'A'ishah, the most severely punished people by Allah on the Day of Resurrection are those who imitate the creation of Allah. So we cut it and made from it a cushion or two cushions
He who painted pictures in the world would be compelled to breathe soul in them on the Day of Resurrection, but he would not be able to breathe soul (in them).
Everyone who makes representations of things will go to hell, and for every representation he has made there will be produced a soul which will punish him in jahannam.
If you must do it, make pictures of trees and of things which do not possess a soul.
فإن كنت لا بد فاعلاً فاصنع الشجر وما لا روح فيهreceiving or giving Riba, (usury), and cursed the picture-makers.
