The fifth question of Fatwa No. ( 2742 ):
Q5: We have heard from some people that images are forbidden, and that the angels do not enter a house in which there are images . Is this correct? And does the intention behind these forbidden images refer to those depicted in the form of a human or an animal, meaning three-dimensional ones, or does it include all types of images, such as those found in wallets and in coins? If the prohibition includes all of this, what is the solution to clearing the house of all of these? Please inform us, may Allah reward you with the best reward.
A5: Yes, images of all living beings, whether human or animal, are forbidden, whether they are three-dimensional, or drawings and colors on paper or the like, or woven into fabric, or photographic images. The angels do not enter a house in which there is an image, due to the generality of the authentic hadiths that indicate this. However, a dispensation is granted in cases of dire necessity, such as images of criminals and suspects for the purpose of identifying them, and images that are included in passports and identity cards, due to the severity of the necessity for them. We hope that these and their like do not prevent the angels from entering the house, out of the necessity of preserving and carrying them. And Allah is the Helper. Likewise, images that are worn out, such as those on bedsheets and pillows, we hope that they do not prevent the angels from entering. Among the hadiths reported on this is the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sunan an-Nasa'i 5362Sahih (Darussalam) narrated by al-Bukhari ,
and it was also narrated from Abu Juhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)Sahih al-Bukhari 2086. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
