The third question of Fatwa No. ( 7443 ):
Q3: Why did the four Imams differ on some matters of Islamic law? Did the Messenger know that these people would come after him?
A3: We do not know whether the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) knew or did not know that the four Imams (may Allah have mercy on them) would come after him; for he does not know the unseen, and he only knows what Allah taught him. As for the causes of disagreement among scholars, they are many, including: that each of them does not encompass all knowledge, so what is hidden from one may be known by another, and one may understand from the texts what another does not when the clear evidence is hidden from him. The Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) elaborated on this in his book [Raf' al-Malam], so refer to it and you will find what is sought clearly, if Allah wills. And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
