The Danger of Disagreement to the Ummah

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q250: The questioner, A.A.A, says in his question: In the hadith of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him):
And indeed, whoever of you lives will see much disagreement, so hold fast to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the Rightly Guided Successors after meوإنه من يعيش منكم فيسرى اختلافاً كثيراً، فعليكم بسنتي وسنة الخلفاء الراشدين من بعدي
Does this disagreement befall the ummah (the Muslim community) in the last times and weaken its unity?

A250: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed us that disagreement would occur, and this information means: a warning against disagreement, because Allah has forbidden us from disagreement. He said, the Exalted:
And do not be like the ones who became divided and differed after the clear proofs had come to themوَلاَ تَكُونُوا كَالَّذِينَ تَفَرَّقُوا وَاخْتَلَفُوا مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا جَاءَهُمُ الْبَيِّنَاتُ
[Ali 'Imran 3:105]
, and disagreement is blameworthy, meaning: if each of the disagreeing parties persists in his madhhab (school of jurisprudence) and his opinion. But if disagreement occurs, it is of the nature of humans and understandings, but this disagreement is resolved by returning to the Book and the Sunnah; so what the Book and Sunnah indicate is taken, and what contradicts them is left. He said, the Exalted:
O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger, if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is the best [way] and best in result.
[An-Nisa 4:59]

So disagreement is of the nature of humans, a difference in concepts, but it is obligatory to return to the Book and the Sunnah, for they are the scale in clarifying the truth, and we do not become biased toward our opinions, or the opinions of our shaykhs (scholars or teachers), or our leaders; and this is not permissible, and it is from taking the monks and rabbis as lords besides Allah, as happened with the Christians. So the position of Muslims in disagreement; they return it to the Book and the Sunnah, and this is the affair of the scholars, as for the common people, they ask the people of knowledge about what is disagreed upon, and they take what they are issued a fatwa (a scholarly legal ruling) with, and they do not take what agrees with their desires and wishes, and they say: So-and-so issued a fatwa, or so-and-so said, without knowing the evidence and its basis. This is a matter that is not permissible, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when he informed about the occurrence of disagreement, said, may the prayer and peace be upon him:
You must then follow my sunnah and that of the rightly-guided caliphs. Hold to it and stick fast to it. Avoid novelties, for every novelty is an innovation, and every innovation is an error.
Sunan Abi Dawud 4607Sahih (Al-Albani)
So the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) did not inform us about the disagreement and remain silent, but rather he said:
Hold fast to my practiceعليكم بسنتي
, so in disagreement we return to the Sunnah of the Messenger, and the Sunnah of his Rightly Guided Successors, and we take what the evidence is established upon, this is what is obligatory upon us.
