Types of shirk.

May Allah reward you. Riya' is minor shirk. An example of that is: a man gives charity in dirhams in front of people so that people will say: So-and-so is generous and gives charity. What is this? Minor shirk. He wants to draw near to Allah. But he wants people to praise him because he draws near to Allah. Be careful! He did not want to draw near to people with this. If he had wanted that, the matter would have been serious. Perhaps we would say: major shirk. But he wants to draw near to Allah, and people praise him as being generous, drawing near to Allah the Exalted through charity. Likewise, a man stands to pray and there are people around him. So he becomes calm in his prayer and does not move. And he steadied his head so that it would be said: So-and-so, what? He perfects his prayer. He does not want to draw near to people with the prayer at all. He wants to draw near to Allah, but he perfected it so that people would say: The man perfects his prayer for Allah Mighty and Majestic. This is riya', this is riya'.
