Fasting in Rajab and Sha'ban

Machine translationRead the Arabic original

The third question of Fatwa No. ( 5169 ):

Q3: I have seen people continuing to fast in Rajab and Sha'ban and following it with the fasting of Ramadan without breaking the fast during this period. Did any hadith come regarding this, and if so, what is the text of the hadith?

A3: It is not authentic from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he fasted the entire month of Rajab or the entire month of Sha'ban, and this is not established from any of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them). In fact, it is not established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he fasted a complete month except Ramadan. It is established from A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said:
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to fast till one would say that he would never stop fasting, and he would abandon fasting till one would say that he would never fast. I never saw Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) fasting for a whole month except the month of Ramadan, and did not see him fasting in any month more than in the month of Sha'ban.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1969
Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim , and from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) he said:
The Prophet (ﷺ) never fasted a full month except the month of Ramadan, and he used to fast till one could say, "By Allah, he will never stop fasting," and he would abandon fasting till one would say, "By Allah, he will never fast."ما صام النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم شهرًا كاملاً قط غير رمضان، وكان يصوم حتى يقول القائل: لا والله لا يفطر، ويفطر حتى يقول القائل: لا والله لا يصوم
Sahih al-Bukhari 1971
Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim . Therefore, fasting the entirety of Rajab as a voluntary act and the entirety of Sha'ban as a voluntary act is contrary to the guidance of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Sunnah in his fasting, so it is an invented religious innovation. It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
'A'isha reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: He who innovates things in our affairs for which there is no valid (reason) (commits sin) and these are to be rejected.من أحدث في أمرنا هذا ما ليس منه فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718a
Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim . And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
