Visiting the Prophet's Mosque
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 2501 ):
Q: Many women, after performing the obligatory Hajj, travel to al-Madinah al-Munawwarah to visit the Prophet's Mosque and the grave of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Is it obligatory for a woman to visit the Prophet's Mosque and the grave of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), or is one of them obligatory, or is neither obligatory? Please inform us of this.
A: Visiting the Prophet's Mosque is not obligatory for women or for men; rather, it is a recommended practice (sunnah) solely for praying in it, and it is permissible to travel for that purpose. Visiting the grave of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is also not obligatory; rather, it is a recommended practice (sunnah) for those whose visit does not require travel, just as visiting the graves of other Muslims is a recommended practice. This is for the sake of taking a lesson, being admonished, and remembering the Hereafter by visiting them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) visited the graves and encouraged their visitation for that reason, not for seeking blessing from them or asking the dead therein to fulfill needs and relieve distress, as many innovators, both men and women, do. However, if visiting the grave of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) or any other grave requires travel, it is not permissible to do so for that purpose; for it is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:Sahih Muslim 827d . It is also known that it is not permissible for women to visit graves; for it is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he . And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

Do not set out on a journey (for religious devotion) but for the three mosques-for this mosque of mine (at Medina) the Sacred Mosque (at Mecca), and the Mosque al-Aqsa (Bait al-Maqdis)
لا تشد الرحال إلاَّ إلى ثلاثة مساجد: مسجدي هذا، والمسجد الحرام ، والمسجد الأقصىCursed are the women who visit graves
