The third question of the fatwa ( 4230 ):
Q3: Is it permissible to intend to travel to visit the graves of the prophets
and the righteous, such as our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and others, and is this visitation prescribed or not?
A3: It is not permissible to travel to visit the graves of the prophets, the righteous, and others; rather, it is a religious innovation (bid'ah). The basis for this is the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Bulugh al-Maram 5:58 , and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih Muslim 1718b . As for visiting them without traveling, it is a recommended practice (sunnah); based on his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: Sunan Ibn Majah 1569Sahih (Darussalam) , narrated by Muslim in his Sahih. And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
