The Amulet and the Hijab with Qur'anic Verses

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 2749 ):
Q: What is your opinion regarding the matter of the amulet and the hijab with Qur'anic verses?
Meaning, is it permissible for a Muslim to carry a hijab containing Qur'anic verses or not?

A: Writing a verse from the Qur'an and hanging it, or hanging the entire Qur'an on the arm or similar, for protection from a feared harm or in hope of removing a harm that has befallen, is among the matters in which the Salaf differed regarding its ruling. Some prohibited it and considered it among the amulets whose hanging is forbidden, because it falls under the generality of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
spells, charms and love-potions are polytheismإن الرقى والتمائم والتولة شرك
Sunan Abi Dawud 3883Sahih (Al-Albani)
narrated by Ahmad and Abu Dawud, and they said: there is no specific text that excludes hanging an amulet if it is from the Qur'an. They also said: hanging an amulet from the Qur'an leads to hanging what is not from the Qur'an. So they prohibited its hanging to block the means to what is not from it. And they said thirdly: it leads to the desecration of what is hung on a person, because he carries it when relieving himself, cleaning himself, having intercourse, and similar. Among those who said this is 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud and his students, and Ahmad ibn Hanbal in a narration from him that many of his companions preferred and the later scholars affirmed. And some scholars permitted hanging amulets that are from the Qur'an and the names and attributes of Allah, and granted a dispensation in that, like 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As , and this was the view of Abu Ja'far al-Baqir and Ahmad in another narration from him. They interpreted the hadith of prohibition as applying to amulets that contain shirk (associating partners with Allah). The first opinion is stronger in evidence and more cautious regarding the creed, because of what it contains of protecting the sanctity of tawhid (the oneness of Allah) and exercising caution. As for what was narrated from Ibn 'Amr , it is only regarding teaching his children the Qur'an and writing it on tablets, and hanging these tablets on
the necks of the children, not with the intention that they be an amulet to ward off harm or bring benefit. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
