Q2: My son is currently living with his mother, and his mother holds for him annually on his date of birth what is called a "birthday," which is a party that includes food and candles equal to the number of years of his age, each candle representing a year, which the child blows out, and then the party begins. What is the ruling of the Shari'ah regarding this?
A2: It is not permissible to hold a birthday celebration for anyone; because it is a religious innovation (bid'ah), and it is established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:Sahih Muslim 1718a , and because it is imitating the disbelievers in their practice, and he (peace be upon him) said: Sunan Abi Dawud 4031Hasan Sahih (Al-Albani) . And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
