Dealing with one who practices fortune-telling and divination

Fatwa number ( 10176 ):
Q: I am a Muslim woman, praise be to Allah, an orphan of both father and mother, thirty-one years old. I work as Allah Mighty and Majestic and the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us, to the best of our ability, if Allah wills. We have been living with my maternal grandmother from the day of my birth until now. My problem is that my grandmother practices (divination or fortune-telling), slaughters animals for other than Allah, and takes the blood from these sacrifices, and Allah knows what she does with it. She asks people for chickens and takes their feathers, and she also makes incense, putting fish skins and various types of reptiles in it. She believes in the people of the graves. She lives off this profession. After I came to know what is lawful and what is forbidden, I tried to be kind to her while at the same time staying away from what is forbidden, not eating what is forbidden, and not helping her in this work, even in receiving people, but to no avail; because I hear what Allah said in His Noble Book and what the Messenger said, and I see people entering and dealing with her, even men, and all the relatives believe her and are afraid to speak to her; because she gets angry at them. They say to me: "This is in place of your mother, and she has the rights of parents and obedience to her; because she is old and consists of years, and she will die." I have stopped eating with her and stopped serving the house, fearing that I am helping her in her work. In the recent period, I cannot even speak to her, not even to greet her; because according to what I read: one does not greet a disbeliever, and I read in a book by some scholars: not even a piece of paper or a cup of water is offered to the owner of this
work, and some relatives and sisters in Allah said to me: "If she gives you something, take it and put it in the trash, and if she gives you money, take it and give it in charity. And this house is her house, and she has the right to let in whom she wishes, even foreign men. She is angry with me and says to me: 'I will not forgive you, and I will hold you accountable before Allah on the Day of Resurrection.' I have no house to go to because there are no mahram (relatives one may not marry) who fear Allah, and there is no Muslim man who proposes to me; because I am old and dark-skinned. Advise me on what I should do? 1 - What is the ruling on my work with my grandmother in not serving the house, speaking to her, and eating with her? 2 - Does she have the rights of parents or not, because I fear the punishment of Allah? 3 - Do we cut off our aunts and relatives; because they believe in every deed and they know that it is forbidden, and I tell them this, even though they pray, but they are mushrik (one who associates partners with Allah) who go to the graves of the awliya (close friends of Allah) and the sorcerers? 4 - Is it permissible to eat the sacrifice of men who pray and slaughter for this woman, even if it is halal (lawful)? 5 - Is it permissible to eat the sacrifice of the owner of bid'ah (religious innovation) and the mushrik who believes in the awliya and others? 6 - What is the ruling of the religion if I go to them and eat from their food, and they take food and some money from her?
7 - If she offers me a gift, do I accept it, based on the hadith of Asma' who accepted a gift from her mother who was a mushrik? 8 - Is it permissible for me to marry a man who prays but is a mushrik for the reasons mentioned above? 9 - My awliya (close friends of Allah) do not pray; do they have the right to contract my marriage or not? And if there is no Muslim judge, what do I do?
First: It is forbidden to work in fortune-telling and divination; due to the hadiths reported regarding that. Second: It is not permissible for you to help your grandmother in the forbidden deeds, and there is no harm in serving her in other than disobedience to Allah the Exalted; due to the saying of Allah the Exalted regarding disbelieving parents:[Luqman 31:15] the verse. Third: It is forbidden to slaughter for other than Allah, and it is from the deeds of shirk (associating partners with Allah), and it is not permissible to eat from the sacrifice of a mushrik. Fourth: It is permissible for you to go to your relatives to advise them regarding what they have fallen into, such as calling upon the awliya and similar forbidden deeds.
Fifth: It is not permissible to eat from the food of one whose earnings are forbidden, nor to accept his gift. Sixth: It is not permissible for a Muslim woman to accept marriage from a man who is a mushrik or who does not pray, and the contract is not valid. Seventh: The Muslim wali (guardian) of the woman takes charge of the marriage contract, and if that is difficult, her reference is the Shari'ah judge. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
