Ruling on going to fortune-tellers, diviners, and sorcerers

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Some people go outside the country to seek treatment from fortune-tellers. They tell them: "There is sorcery in you, and so-and-so is the one who cast it on you," and they inform them of his name, even though he did not know it. Is it obligatory to seek treatment from them? They claim that this work is permissible for them.

Answer:
Seeking treatment from sorcerers and fortune-tellers is an abomination and is not permissible. It is not permissible to ask them, visit them, or believe them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who visits a diviner ('Arraf) and asks him about anything, his prayers extending to forty nights will not be accepted.من أتى عرافًا، فسأله عن شيء؛ لم تقبل له صلاة أربعين يومًا
Sahih Muslim 2230
It was narrated by Muslim in the Sahih.
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever goes to a fortune-teller or a diviner and believes what he says has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad.من أتى كاهنًا، أو عرافًا، فصدقه بما يقول؛ فقد كفر بما أنزل على محمد
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 15:741
-may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him-.
The diviners are those who claim to have knowledge of fortune-telling, knowledge of sorcery, and knowledge of everything that has happened. They say: "What is your mother’s name? What is your father’s name? So-and-so cast sorcery on you, and so-and-so said to you such-and-such on such-and-such a day, and on such-and-such a day." This is how they act.
One should not visit these people, and it is not permissible to ask them. Rather, they should be exposed. Whoever knows them should report their case to the righteous rulers, to the court, to the Ministry of Interior, or to me, and I will do what is necessary -if Allah wills- if I know of them in any place. It is not permissible for him to remain silent about them or cover for them. Rather, he should expose them in Jizan, in Abha, in the North, in Morocco, or in any place. This is part of cooperating in righteousness and piety.
Their case should be reported to the court, to the courts, to the righteous rulers, to the King, to the Minister of Interior, to me, or to the head of the committees, as part of cooperating in righteousness and piety. He should specify their location, saying: "In such-and-such a place, his name is so-and-so, son of so-and-so," so that efforts can be made to remove them and put an end to them. May Allah protect us from their evil.
