Whoever sees me in a dream will see me in waking, and Satan will not impersonate me

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 9898 ):
Q: It is reported in [Sahih al-Bukhari] from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever sees me in a dream will see me in his wakefulness, and Satan cannot imitate me in shape.من رآني في المنام فسيراني في اليقظة ولا يتمثل الشيطان بي
Sahih al-Bukhari 6993
. Does this mean that a person can see the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in a waking state, given that there has been much discussion on this topic and some people have claimed to have seen the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in a waking state, citing this hadith as evidence?

A: It is the established decree of Allah that He made people alive in this world after they were dead, to test them as to who is best in deed, then He causes them to die in it when their lifespans end, and then He resurrects them on the Day of Resurrection for the Reckoning and recompense. Allah the Exalted said:
How can you disbelieve in Allah when you were lifeless and He brought you to life; then He will cause you to die, then He will bring you [back] to life, and then to Him you will be returned.
[Al-Baqarah 2:28]

And He the Exalted said in Surat al-Mu'minun:
(15) Then indeed, after that you are to die. (16) Then indeed you, on the Day of Resurrection, will be resurrected.ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ لَمَيِّتُونَ (15) ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ تُبْعَثُونَ
[Al-Mu'minun 23:15-16]
And He the Exalted made this cosmic decree general for the prophets and messengers, even our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Allah the Exalted said:
(30) Indeed, you are to die, and indeed, they are to die. (31) Then indeed you, on the Day of Resurrection, before your Lord, will dispute.
[Az-Zumar 39:30-31]
. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away after he had conveyed the message, and Allah completed the religion through him and established the proof upon His creation. His Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) prayed the funeral prayer over him and buried him where he died, in the chamber of A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her). The Rightly Guided Caliphs succeeded him, and during their times various events and incidents occurred, which they addressed through their independent legal reasoning, and they did not return to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for any of them. Therefore, whoever claims after that that he saw him in a waking state alive, spoke with him, or heard something from him before the Day of Resurrection and resurrection, his claim is false; because it contradicts the texts, observation, and the decree of Allah in His creation. This hadith does not indicate that he will see his actual self in a waking state in this worldly life; because it is possible that the meaning is: he will see me on the Day of Resurrection. It is also possible that the meaning is: he will see the interpretation of his dream; because this dream is true, as evidenced by what came in other narrations of his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
So he has seen meفقد رآني
the hadith. And the believer may see him in a dream, a true dream, in the form he was in (peace and blessings be upon him) during his worldly life. If you wish to gain further benefit, refer to what the scholar Ahmad ibn Hajar wrote explaining this hadith in his book [Fath al-Bari]. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
