Fatwa number ( 2224 ):
Q: I read a hadith from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When the believers pass safely over (the bridge across) Hell, they will be stopped at a bridge in between Hell and Paradise where they will retaliate upon each other for the injustices done among them in the world, and when they get purified of all their sins, they will be admitted into Paradise
إذا خلص المؤمنون من النار حبسوا بقنطرة بين الجنة والنار فيتقاضون مظالم كانت بينهم في الدنيا، وإذا نقوا وهذبوا أذن لهم بدخول الجنةand what is the meaning of: “The believers will be saved from the Fire,” when it has been stated in the Great Qur'an that Allah the Exalted said:
And there is none of you except he will come to it. This is upon your Lord an inevitability decreed.
وَإِنْ مِنْكُمْ إِلا وَارِدُهَا كَانَ عَلَى رَبِّكَ حَتْمًا مَقْضِيًّاA: When the believers in general cross the Sirat, those among them who have injustices against the believers are stopped at a place between Paradise and the Fire, and they are prevented from entering Paradise until the wronged person is compensated by the one who wronged him. The wrongdoer's good deeds are taken and given to the wronged person. Once they are purified and cleansed, they are permitted to enter Paradise. As for the one who has no injustice against anyone, the apparent meaning of this hadith and other hadiths indicating that some believers enter Paradise without reckoning or punishment is that he is not stopped. As for the statement of Allah the Exalted:
And there is none of you except he will come to it. This is upon your Lord an inevitability decreed.
وَإِنْ مِنْكُمْ إِلا وَارِدُهَا كَانَ عَلَى رَبِّكَ حَتْمًا مَقْضِيًّاThen We will save those who feared Allah and leave the wrongdoers within it, on their knees.
ثُمَّ نُنَجِّي الَّذِينَ اتَّقَوْا وَنَذَرُ الظَّالِمِينَ فِيهَا جِثِيًّا, and He has obligated upon Himself this recompense and decreed it for them with a final decree, with no one to turn back His decree and no change to His ruling. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad , and his family and his Companions.
