The questioner : What is the meaning of the saying of Allah the Exalted:
(71) And there is none of you except he will come to it. This is upon your Lord an inevitability decreed. (72) Then We will save those who feared Allah and leave the wrongdoers within it, on their knees.
[Maryam 19:71-72]

The Shaykh : The saying of Allah the Exalted:
And there is none of you except he will come to it
[Maryam 19:71]
, the pronoun
itهَا
refers to the Fire
and notوإن
, and "inna" means "not," meaning: there is no one among you but will come to the Fire,
Then Allah will save those who feared Him and leave the wrongdoers in it prostrate
. The scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) differed regarding the "coming" (al-wurud) mentioned in this verse. Some said that the coming means entering it, meaning that all people will enter it, but the believers will not feel its heat; rather, it will be coolness and peace for them, just as the Fire was coolness and peace for Ibrahim (peace be upon him) in this world. These scholars cited as evidence that "coming" (al-wurud) can mean entering, citing the saying of Allah the Exalted regarding Pharaoh:
He will precede his people on the Day of Resurrection and lead them into the Fire; and wretched is the place to which they are led.
[Hud 11:98]
, and His saying:
And will drive the criminals to Hell in thirst
[Maryam 19:86]
, and similar verses.
Some scholars said that the meaning of "coming" (al-wurud) in the phrase:
And there is none of you except he will come to it
[Maryam 19:71]
is crossing over the Sirat, because the Sirat is stretched over Hell, and people cross it according to their deeds. Thus, this crossing over the Sirat is the "coming" mentioned in the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And there is none of you except he will come to it
[Maryam 19:71]
. They supported their view by the fact that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed that no one who pledged allegiance under the tree will enter the Fire. This was during the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) pledged allegiance with his companions under a tree there. They also cited that it is established in the two Sahihs from the hadith of 'Utbah ibn Malik:
Indeed, Allah has forbidden the Fire for the one who says: There is no god but Allah, seeking thereby the Face of Allah
Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah 3:173
. His saying:
, and his saying in the hadith before it:
No one of those who took the oath of allegiance under the tree will go to hell.
Sunan Abi Dawud 4653Sahih (Al-Albani)
, indicates that the believers do not enter the Fire. If that is the case, then it is established that the meaning of "coming" (al-wurud) is passing over it.
Both views have merit, and knowledge belongs to Allah the Exalted. However, it is important that we know with certainty that whoever dies among the people of major sins, if he enters the Fire, will be punished according to his sins, and then he will be brought out of it, if Allah the Exalted wills to punish him. Allah may also forgive him, for Allah the Exalted says:
Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills
[An-Nisa 4:48]
. However, a person should, indeed it is obligatory upon him, to hasten to repent from every sin, because he does not know; perhaps he will not be included in Allah's will to forgive him. Whoever dies without repenting from major sins, other than disbelief and shirk (associating partners with Allah), it is feared that Allah will not forgive him, because Allah conditioned His forgiveness for him with His will, saying: "whom He wills." Therefore, some people should not take this verse as a way to be negligent in repentance and indifferent to committing major sins, for he does not know whether he will be among those whom Allah wills to forgive or not. He is in danger until he repents to Allah with a sincere repentance.
