The Reality of the Claim of the Transmigration of Souls

Machine translationRead the Arabic original

Questions three and five from Fatwa No. ( 5167 ):

Q3: Our philosophy professor told us that the soul moves from one person to another. Is this correct? And if it is correct, how is it that the soul is the one that is punished and held accountable, if it moves, then the other person is held accountable?
A3: What your philosophy professor told you, that the soul moves from one person to another, is not correct. The basis for this is the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And [mention] when your Lord took from the children of Adam - from their loins - their descendants and made them testify of themselves, [saying to them], "Am I not your Lord?" They said, "Yes, we have testified." [This] - lest you should say on the day of Resurrection, "Indeed, we were of this unaware."
[Al-A'raf 7:172]
, and the interpretation of this verse came in what Malik narrated in his Muwatta, that 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about this verse:
And [mention] when your Lord took from the children of Adam - from their loins - their descendants and made them testify of themselves, [saying to them], "Am I not your Lord?" They said, "Yes, we have testified." [This] - lest you should say on the day of Resurrection, "Indeed, we were of this unaware."
[Al-A'raf 7:172]
, and 'Umar
(may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) being asked about it, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Indeed Allah created Adam, then He wiped his back with His Right Hand, and his offspring came out of him. So he said: "I created these for Paradise, and they will do the deeds of the people of Paradise." Then He wiped his back, and his offspring came out of him. So He said: "I created these for the Fire, and they will do the deeds of the people of the Fire."
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3075Da'if (Darussalam)
the hadith. Ibn 'Abd al-Barr said: The meaning of this hadith is that it is authentic from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from many established aspects, from the hadith of 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud , 'Ali ibn Abi Talib , and Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with them all), and others. And the people of the Sunnah and the community have agreed upon this, and they mentioned that the claim that the soul moves from one body to another is the claim of the people of transmigration, and they are among the most disbelieving of people, and their claim is among the most false of falsehoods.
