Do the souls of the dead and the living meet in dreams?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Is it true that the souls of the dead and the living meet in dreams? This is what was mentioned in the book "Al-Ruh" by Ibn al-Qayyim.

Answer:
A number of scholars have mentioned this, including Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) and others. They state that souls meet, and this is not far-fetched, for reality bears witness to it. And Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) is capable of all things . The souls of the believers are in Paradise, and the souls of the disbelievers are in the Fire. It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) what indicates that the soul of a believer is a bird that perches in the trees of Paradise. There is no impediment, whether in reality or in the Shari'ah, to souls meeting. However, I do not know of a clear text regarding this matter. But what the scholars have mentioned and the many visions that occur bear witness to its validity. We have been informed of many visions from trustworthy people that indicate the meeting of souls. And Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) is capable of all things, (Glorified and Exalted is He).
It does not follow from their being in Paradise that they are not permitted to return to the world to return the greeting to one who greeted the occupant of the grave, or for other reasons, as in the hadith:
If any one of you greets me, Allah returns my soul to me and I respond to the greeting.ما من أحدٍ يُسلِّم عليَّ إلا ردَّ الله عليَّ روحي حتى أردَّ عليه السلام
Sunan Abi Dawud 2041Hasan (Al-Albani)
, and in the other authentic hadith:
No servant passes by a person he knew in this world except that Allah returns his soul to him so that he may return the greeting to him.ما من عبدٍ يمر على شخصٍ كان يعرفه في الدنيا إلا ردَّ الله عليه روحه حتى يردَّ عليه السلام
. So there is no impediment to meeting, and even if one soul is in Paradise and the other in the Fire, there is no impediment to meeting in the power of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) .
Trustworthy people, whom I cannot count, have informed me of many visions that include the meeting of souls: the meeting of the souls of the dead with the living, and informing them of such and such matters from the affairs of the world and its people.
Therefore, in such a case, one should not deny this. One should either say, "Allah knows best," or say, "This is possible." And what appears is that it is possible and that it actually happens. The evidence from what the scholars have mentioned and what the trustworthy people have reported all indicates that it occurs, and we cannot count the occurrences that indicate this.
