The ruling on affiliating with some Sufi paths, such as the Shadhiliyyah

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q4: Is there any blame on a person if he enters the path attributed to the shaykh 'Abd al-Qadir and Abu al-Hasan al-Shadhili and affiliates with it, and is it a sunnah or a bid'ah?
A4: Abu Dawud and others of the compilers of the Sunan narrated from the route of
al-'Arba' ibn Sariyah that he said:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed with us one day, then turned to us and gave us a sermon that was eloquent, causing our eyes to shed tears and our hearts to tremble. A man said: O Messenger of Allah, this is like the sermon of one who is taking his leave. What do you bequeath to us? He said: I advise you to fear Allah, and to listen and obey, even if a black slave is appointed over you. Indeed, whoever of you lives after me will see much disagreement. So hold fast to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs. Hold fast to them and bite down on them with your molars. Beware of newly invented matters, for every newly invented matter is a bid'ah, and every bid'ah is misguidance.
. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) informed him that much disagreement would occur in his Ummah, that paths and methodologies would branch out for them, and that innovations and newly invented matters would multiply among them. He ordered the Muslims to hold fast to the Book of Allah, to adhere to his Sunnah, and to bite down on it with their molars. He warned them against division, disagreement, and following innovations and newly invented matters, because they are misguiding and mazes that cause whoever follows them to deviate from the path of Allah. So he advised them with what he advised his servants in His saying, the Exalted:
And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided
[Ali 'Imran 3:103]
and His saying:
And, [moreover], this is My path, which is straight, so follow it; and do not follow [other] ways, for you will be separated from His way. This has He instructed you that you may become righteous.
[Al-An'am 6:153]
We advise you with the advice of Allah and the advice of His Messenger, and we counsel you to adhere to the methodology of the people of the Sunnah and the community , and we warn you against what the people of the paths have innovated
of defective Sufism, innovated daily recitations, dhikr that is not prescribed, and supplications containing shirk (associating partners with Allah) or what is a means to it, such as calling for aid from other than Allah, mentioning Him with singular names, and mentioning Him with the word "Aah" which is not among His names, the Exalted. They also seek nearness to Allah through the shaykhs in supplication, and believe that they are spies of the hearts who know what they conceal. They mention Allah collectively with one voice in circles with swaying and songs, among other things that are not known in the Book of Allah or the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him).
