Explanation of the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: “Indeed, Allah tests His servant with illness until He expiates for him every sin.”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The one following it, where it is authentic, is his saying:
And from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
Indeed, Allah tests His servant with illness until He expiates for him every sin إنَّ الله لَيبتلي عبده بالسقم حتى يكفِّرَ ذلك عنه كلَّ ذنب
Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 14:34
.
The illness here means the severe kind, accompanied, as we have mentioned more than once, by patience with it. This causes Allah to expiate for him every sin. This is a generalization that must be considered in light of its counterpart: a great calamity accompanied by patience and contentment with the divine decree. This hadith was narrated by al-Hakim, who said: “It is authentic according to the conditions of both of them.” His statement “according to the conditions of both of them” contains great leniency, because in the chain of the hadith there is a man named Abd al-Rahman ibn Salman al-Hajri, and he is one of those for whom al-Bukhari did not narrate anything. Therefore, the hadith is authentic only according to the conditions of Muslim.
The hadith following it, as well as the one after that, are weak.
