The Twentieth Deviation from the Sunnah: The Hadith (There is no charity in what is less than five wasqs)
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The Twentieth [Deviation]: Sahih Muslim 979a A wasq is the load of a camel. This hadith establishes the nisab (minimum threshold) for grains subject to zakah; it must be five camel loads. So, if the harvest reaches five camel loads, zakah is due on it. The Hanafis say that everything the earth grows is subject to zakah, whether it is little or much. This generality is restricted by this [hadith], just as we have restricted many, many texts, including: [Al-Ma'idah 5:3], "Every carrion," but it was restricted by what? By the hadith. And so on. You see them rejecting the Sunnah. The principle for them is to support the madhhab (school of jurisprudence), but even this does not reveal their blatant fanaticism for the madhhab. They have formulated rules from their own minds, named them, adorned them, and so on. They say, for example, that a hadith of a single narrator (ahad) does not establish the principles, that a hadith of a single narrator cannot restrict the Qur'an, and that one cannot add to the Qur'an, and so on. I am now going to perform wudu (ablution) for Maghrib (the sunset prayer), and I will continue the discussion, if Allah wills.
