The Shaykh : The second: what is brought out of the earth. Is zakah obligatory on everything that is brought out of the earth? Look, Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said: O you who believe! Spend out of the good things which you have earned, and of that which We have brought forth for you from the earth. And what? And of that which We have brought forth for you from the earth. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: In that which is watered by rain or is rain-fed, one-tenth is due, and in that which is watered by irrigation, half of one-tenth is due. If we took the generality of this verse and this hadith, we would say: zakah is obligatory on everything that is brought out of the earth, even on watermelons, even on vegetables, on everything. The verse is general and the hadith is general. But there is something that restricts it: it must reach the nisab, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): There is no charity in what is less than five wasqs. So it must reach five wasqs or more. Second: it must be of that which is measured in wasqs, meaning: it is carried, stored, and used as food, such as: dates, wheat, barley, rice. As for that which is not measured in wasqs, there is no zakah on it. Now we ask: Are vegetables and fruits and the like measured in wasqs? No. It is customary that they are taken individually or by weight and eaten immediately. There is no zakah on these. So not everything that is brought out of the earth has zakah on it, no, it is restricted and specified according to what came in the Book and the Sunnah, good.
