The Shaykh : What is that?

Another student: He has a tongue for poetry.

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : So, O my Shaykh, glory be to Allah! During this period, I do not read poetry at all, nor do I try to write it or try to get close to it. What is your opinion on poetry, O Shaykh?

The Shaykh : My opinion on poetry is as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Poetry is speech; so its good is good, and its bad is bad الشعر كلام ؛ فحسنه حسن ، وقبيحه قبيح
Sunan ad-Daraqutni 22:19
.

The questioner : And what about poetry of praise, O Shaykh, praise of individuals?

The Shaykh
Beware of praise إياك والمدح
,
Beware of praise, for it is slaughter إياك والمدح فإنه الذبح
Do you know this hadith? Your poetry has fallen from its root.

The questioner : No, O Shaykh, how can you judge me?

The Shaykh : It has fallen, from your question to another.
