The Ruling on Writing Poetry

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Among the questions of this questioner—may the Shaykh be respected—from Libya, he says: What is the ruling on writing poetry, which is a product of imagination and the weaving of the human mind? That is, what a person says of his own accord?

Answer:
There is no harm in poetry. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
In poetry there is wisdom.إن من الشعر حكمة
Sunan Abi Dawud 5010Sahih (Al-Albani)
If it is good poetry praising good morals, encouraging prayer, encouraging noble character, encouraging kindness in dealing with women, encouraging dutifulness to parents, maintaining family ties, and so on, if it is good poetry, then there is nothing wrong with it. Its good is good, and its bad is bad. If the poetry is about something permissible, or something recommended and sought after, then it is good. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good, and may He do you good.
