Discussion on continuous fasting and human capacity in fasting.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : And if Allah (Mighty and Majestic) had willed, He would have made us fast day and night. No one has the right to say, "Why is it so? Why did You not lighten it for us?" because Allah (Mighty and Majestic) tests His servants with whatever He wills. If it is a reality that a person is able to continue night and day, night and day, maintaining continuous fasting without food or drink, and this is not prescribed—this is what is called wasal (continuous fasting)—whereas the Messenger (peace be upon him) used to practice wasal, when he forbade them from it, they said, "But you practice wasal?" He said:
Indeed, I stay the night with my Lord, and He feeds me and gives me drink. إني أبيت عند ربِّي يطعمني ويسقيني
Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah 5:170
. The point is that there is no difficulty in a person fasting for twenty-four hours consecutively, let alone less than that; because human energy possesses strange and wondrous capacities that may not appear except under specific circumstances.
