The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
The author said -may Allah have mercy on him- in his book *Riyad al-Salihin*: "Chapter on the Prohibition of Continuous Fasting":
And the meaning of continuous fasting (wasal) is that a person joins two days in fasting without breaking the fast between them. Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) has specified fasting in His saying:
So now, have relations with them and seek that which Allah has decreed for you. And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread [of night]. Then complete the fast until the sunset.
[Al-Baqarah 2:187]
, He said:
Then complete the fast until the sunset
[Al-Baqarah 2:187]
: So Allah has defined the beginning and the end of fasting. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The people will remain upon goodness as long as they hasten to break the fast.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 699Sahih (Darussalam)
.
This is what is prescribed: that a person hastens to break his fast and does not delay. It is not permissible for him to fast continuously between two days, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited that and said:
if anyone of you intends to fast continuously day and night, he should continue till the Suhur time.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1967
. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) permitted continuous fasting until the pre-dawn meal, meaning that one should eat the pre-dawn meal at the end of the night. By this, it becomes clear that the fasting person has three states:
The first state: that he hastens to break his fast after the setting of the sun. This is the Sunnah, the best, and the most complete.
The second state: that he delays until the pre-dawn meal. This is permissible, but it is contrary to what is preferred.
The third state: that he does not break the fast between the two days, but fasts continuously. This is forbidden according to the view of the author (may Allah have mercy on him), and this is the closest view, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited continuous fasting. So they (may Allah be pleased with them) fasted continuously, thinking that he only prohibited it out of kindness to them and compassion for them. They said: We can bear it. So they fasted continuously, and he left them. Then they fasted continuously and continuously until the new moon appeared, the month of Shawwal. So he said:
If the new moon had been delayed, I would have increased it for you, with his disapproval of them (peace and blessings be upon him)
. And this indicates the prohibition.
Some scholars held the view that continuous fasting is disliked rather than forbidden, because the operative cause is kindness to the person, and a person is the master of himself. But the closest view is that continuous fasting is forbidden due to the prohibition of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him),
And because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) fasted continuously with them for one day, and one day, and one day, until the new moon was seen, and he said: If it had been delayed, I would have increased it for you
.
And what some of the Salaf did, as is narrated from 'Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both): "that he used to fast continuously for fifteen days without breaking the fast between them", this was his independent legal reasoning and interpretation, but the correct view is what the Sunnah indicates.
