Q423: The questioner says: A hadith was reported from the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) to the effect that: Sunan ad-Darimi 8:32 Is this feeding physical, or spiritual?
A423: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this when he forbade his Companions from continuous fasting (wasal). Wasal is fasting for two days without breaking the fast in between. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to practice wasal, but he forbade his Companions from doing so. They said to him: “O Messenger of Allah, you practice wasal.” He said:Sunan ad-Darimi 8:32. The scholars have differed on this: is it physical feeding and drinking, such that food and drink are brought to him from Paradise, or is it spiritual, meaning that he takes pleasure in the remembrance of Allah and the recitation of the Qur'an, and this strengthens his body and soul so that he does not need food and drink? The important point is that this is one of his (peace and blessings be upon him) unique characteristics.
