Prohibition against excessive asceticism and delving too deeply into religion.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Rather, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The excessive ones have perished, the excessive ones have perished, the excessive ones have perished. هلك المتنطعون هلك المتنطعون هلك المتنطعون
Three times. Is the sentence here declarative or exclamatory?
The student: Declarative.

The Shaykh : Yes, well done. An exclamatory sentence means that he invoked destruction upon those who are excessive. It is also possible that it is a declarative sentence, meaning that the Messenger affirmed that those who are excessive and delve too deeply into their religion will be destroyed. There is another example: the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) in fasting. Do you know what "wasal" is?
The student: Wasal.

The Shaykh : Yes, that is right.
The student: Mention it.

The Shaykh : Come on, stand up?
The student: Wasal...

The Shaykh : It is to fast two days without breaking the fast in between. That is complete. This is what the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) did with wasal. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade them from wasal and said, "What is the matter with these people who delve too deeply?" Even though they only did wasal hoping for what?
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : They were not hoping for a great reward, but the Messenger called them those who delve too deeply and rebuked them. In fact, when he (may Allah be pleased with them) saw them continuing with wasal, they thought that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) only forbade it out of compassion for them, since they were capable of wasal, so he left them alone. He continued with them until the crescent of Shawwal was seen one day, and another day, and another day, until the crescent was seen. Then he said:
If the crescent had delayed, I would have continued fasting (because of you) لو تأخر الهلال لزدتكم
Sahih al-Bukhari 7299
as if mocking them (peace and blessings be upon him). But they brought it up to him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, you do wasal, so why do you not allow us to do wasal?" He said:
I am not like you. I am fed and supplied drink (by Allah). إني لست كهيئتكم إني أطعم وأسقى
Sahih Muslim 1102a
He eats what? He eats bread and is given water. If that were the case, it would not be wasal. But because of the strength of his attachment to his Lord (Mighty and Majestic) and his preoccupation with His remembrance, he was content with that without food and drink. This is the meaning of his saying "I am fed and given drink." And everyone knows that when a person's heart is strongly attached to something, he forgets eating and drinking, is that not so? He goes out with his companion, and they talk, meaning a complete friendly conversation, and he forgets the time for lunch and the time for dinner because of the strength of his heart's attachment to this. And for this reason, the poet said:
"Her stories of your remembrance occupy her *** From drink and distract her from food"
Meaning, you forget eating and drinking when you talk to me. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has a special attribute regarding wasal, and we have a special attribute.
