What is the ruling on continuous fasting (wasal) in fasting?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Is the ruling on continuous fasting (wasal) disliked?

Answer:
It is disliked; because if it had been forbidden, he would not have continued fasting with them. So it is disliked; it is not something that should be done.
Q: Who said that it is a special characteristic of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him)?
A: No, it is not one of his special characteristics, not one of his legislated special characteristics. Ibn al-Zubayr and a group of people used to continue fasting and say: "It does not burden us." But in any case, the least of its states is that it is disliked; because if it had been forbidden, he would not have continued fasting with them. But when they persisted in seeking continuous fasting, he continued fasting with them for one day, then another day, then they saw the crescent moon, and he said: "If it had been delayed, I would have increased it for you." This indicates that it is not appropriate for them to exert themselves in this matter, but rather it is appropriate for them to accept the dispensation: Indeed, Allah loves that His dispensations be taken.
Q: What is the longest time it is permissible for a Muslim to continue fasting until, until 'Isha' or until the pre-dawn meal?
A: If he wants to continue fasting, it is until the pre-dawn meal, just as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
if anyone of you intends to fast continuously day and night, he should continue till the Suhur time.فأيّكم أراد أن يواصل فليواصل إلى السحر
Sahih al-Bukhari 1967
. So if he leaves off 'Isha' and the pre-dawn meal and his eating becomes from the pre-dawn meal to the pre-dawn meal, there is nothing wrong with it. But the best is to break his fast with the people. When the sun sets, the best is to break his fast and accept Allah's dispensation. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When night falls from this side and the day vanishes from this side and the sun sets, then the fasting person should break his fast.إذا أقبل الليلُ من هاهنا، وأدبر النهارُ من هاهنا، وغربت الشمس؛ فقد أفطر الصائم
Sahih al-Bukhari 1954
. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said in the authentic hadith:
The people will remain upon goodness as long as they hasten to break the fast.لا يزال الناس بخيرٍ ما عجَّلوا الفطر
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 699Sahih (Darussalam)
. And Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, says:
Those of My worshippers who are most beloved to me are the quickest to break their fast.أحبُّ عبادي إليَّ أعجلهم فطرًا
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 700Da'if (Darussalam)
. So this is the Sunnah: not exerting oneself.
Q: So the permissibility is from the pre-dawn meal to the pre-dawn meal only?
A: Yes, and the best is not to do it.
Q: But it does not reach the level of being disliked?
A: No.
Q: Are these hadiths not a rejection of selfishness, where everyone wants to impose his opinion on the people or on the group around him?
A: What contradicts the Shari'ah is not good, so it is not good to impose an opinion that contradicts the Shari'ah. But if he wants to advise them with something that agrees with the Shari'ah, may Allah reward him with good.
Q: It is reported in the biographies that Imam Ahmad used to continue fasting until the end of his life?
A: If it is established from him, then he was mistaken. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) is the role model. Ahmad or anyone else, they are all the same. And every scholar makes mistakes and hits the mark, he exerts effort and makes mistakes.
