Explanation of the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): (Allah the Exalted said to the soul: "Come out." It said: "I will not come out except reluctantly).

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The second hadith is also authentic, but as we will notice, it has no connection to this chapter. It was also narrated with the same authentic chain from Abu Hurayrah from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Allah ta'ala said to the self, 'Go forth.' It replied, 'I only go forth reluctantly.'
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 219
This hadith has no relation to the chapter, and therefore some scholars held that the author narrated this second hadith with the same chain as the first hadith, so it is not the specific one intended, but rather it came following the previous hadith, which is his saying (peace be upon him):
He who does not thank the people is not thankful to Allah.
Sunan Abi Dawud 4811Sahih (Al-Albani)
So this second hadith came following the first, as they said. In any case, this is an authentic hadith. Its intended meaning is:
Allah Mighty and Majestic said to the soul: "Come out."
meaning, "O spirit, come out." So it responded:
I only go forth reluctantly.
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 219
, and in this is an indication of the human attachment to life, such that the spirit does not leave its body and does not separate from it except reluctantly and forced. Therefore, it came in some authentic hadiths:
Whoever loves to meet Allah, then Allah loves to meet him. And whoever dislikes meeting Allah, then Allah dislikes meeting him.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1066Sahih (Darussalam)
. So Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: How is this, when none of us is one who does not find his soul reluctant to death? So the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) answered by saying:
That is only when the term is present.
And when death presents itself to a person, at that time the truth becomes clear to him, and he sees his abode in Paradise or he sees his abode in the Fire. So whoever is among the people of Paradise and sees his abode in Paradise at that time loves to meet Allah, and whoever is the opposite of that, and may Allah protect us, if he is among the people of the Fire, then the veil is lifted from him at the gasping of the spirit, so at that time he hates to meet Allah because he knows that his destination is the Fire. The purpose of this hadith is that the Messenger (peace be upon him) affirmed Aisha in her statement that none of us is one who does not hate death, so how, O Messenger of Allah, do you say:
Whoever loves to meet Allah, then Allah loves to meet him. And whoever dislikes meeting Allah, then Allah dislikes meeting him.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1066Sahih (Darussalam)
? So the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) answered that this is at the time of the soul's departure, at the presence of the term, at that time a person hates to meet Allah if he is an open sinner or a disbeliever, and he loves to meet Allah if he is a sincere believer, because the believer has his insight revealed in that hour, and he sees his rank in Paradise, so he loves to meet Allah, and the opposite is the opposite. So his saying (peace and blessings be upon him) in this hadith:
Allah ta'ala said to the self, 'Go forth.' It replied, 'I only go forth reluctantly.'
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 219
is an explanation of this which is innate in humans, their love of life, so when the signs of happiness appear to him and that he is among its people, he loves to meet Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) at that time.
