The Shaykh : Among the characteristics of Ramadan is that Allah the Exalted made it obligatory for His servants to fast it. He, Glorified and Exalted is He, said:

O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous -

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمْ الصِّيَامُ كَمَا كُتِبَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُون َ

[Al-Baqarah 2:183]

up to His saying:

The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an

شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ الَّذِي أُنزِلَ فِيهِ الْقُرْآنُ

[Al-Baqarah 2:185]

. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) informed that

Whoever fasts it with faith and seeking reward, Allah will forgive him what has passed of his sins.

من صامه إيماناً واحتساباً غفر الله له ما تقدم من ذنبه
