Explanation of the hadith of Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): "The believer is not one who slanders, nor one who curses, nor one who is obscene, nor one who is vulgar."

The Shaykh : Then al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) followed this with the authentic hadith, which he narrated from Abdullah, who is here Ibn Mas'ud, as he also narrated it from Abu Hurayrah. This is one of the rare hadiths where the author presents two chains of narration from two Companions with a single chain. He narrated it here through his chain from Isra'il from al-A'mash from Abu Hurayrah; this is the first chain. Then he said: "And from 'Uqbah from Abdullah," and this is the second chain. And Abdullah, as we mentioned, is Ibn Mas'ud, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1977Hasan (Darussalam). Before I forget, even if it is just a small word about the first chain: we said that this hadith is authentic, but a quick look at the first chain, which is al-A'mash's narration from Abu Hurayrah, reveals that this chain is not valid because al-A'mash did not meet Abu Hurayrah, so it is a broken chain. If the hadith had been unique to this chain, or if this chain had been unique to this hadith, the hadith would have been weak, not to be relied upon, and it would not be permissible to attribute it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). For some reason, al-Bukhari added "and from 'Uqbah," meaning that the narrator did not narrate it only from al-A'mash from Abu Hurayrah through the broken chain, but also from 'Uqbah from Abdullah ibn Mas'ud. So al-A'mash's narration from Abu Hurayrah of this hadith is a broken narration, and his narration from 'Uqbah from Abdullah is connected, so the hadith is authentic through the second path, not the first. The hadith does not need commentary; it is clear in itself, and it has passed before us once or more than once. I repeat its wording: meaning the one who slanders people frequently and frequently without right, who curses them, in his speech, in his tongue.
The believer does not insult the honor of others, nor curse, nor commit Fahishah, nor is he foul.
ليسَ المؤمنُ بالطَّعَّان ، ولا اللَّعَّان ، ولا الفاحش ، ولا البذيءThe believer is not one who slanders.
ليس المؤمن بالطَّعَّانNor one who curses.
ولا اللَّعَّانNor one who is obscene.
ولا الفاحشNor one who is vulgar.
ولا البذي
