The Shaykh : Now we have a hadith with a sound chain of narration. It is narrated from 'Abdullah, and 'Abdullah here is 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), the noble Companion of the Badr campaign. He narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) who said: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1977Hasan (Darussalam).
This hadith does not need any commentary or explanation, for it is clear in itself. "The believer is not one who slanders" means this is a form of exaggeration; he slanders people without right. Know that this trait is among the ugliest traits and the most severe of morals by which a Muslim is censured and deserves to enter the Fire, even if the amount of this bad character he possesses—slandering people—is very little. This is because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said in an authentic hadith:Sahih Muslim 91c. The hadith is long, and we have mentioned it in full more than once. In it, the Companions asked him: one of them loves to see fine clothes on him, another fine sandals, and a third a fine whip, meaning a "kurbaj" (whip). They asked if that is from arrogance. The answer in all of that was no, no, no. Sahih Muslim 91a. They said: Then what is arrogance? He said: Sahih Muslim 91a. Rejecting the truth is denying the truth after it has become apparent, and belittling people is slandering them without right. So whoever has a trait of this arrogance that the Messenger (may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him) described as rejecting the truth after it has become apparent, or slandering a Muslim without right, he does not enter Paradise. Therefore, this trait from which the Messenger (peace be upon him) absolved the believer is among the most severe traits mentioned in this context, which is slandering. So he (peace be upon him) said: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1977Hasan (Darussalam), also without cause. And we have detailed the cause in the past regarding what is permissible and what is not permissible in cursing. Then he said: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1977Hasan (Darussalam). "Al-fahish" (obscene) and "al-badhi'" (vulgar) are approximately the same meaning, which is vulgarity of the tongue and obscenity in speech.
The believer does not insult the honor of others, nor curse, nor commit Fahishah, nor is he foul.
This is because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said in an authentic hadith:
He who has in his heart the weight of a mustard seed of pride shall not enter Paradise.
Verily, Allah is Graceful and He loves Grace
Pride is disdaining the truth (out of self-conceit) and contempt for the people.
The believer does not insult the honor of others, nor curse
ليس المؤمن بالطَّعَّان ولا اللَّعَّان لغيرهnor commit Fahishah, nor is he foul.
