Explanation of Riyad al-Salihin-82a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
He said, may Allah have mercy on him: "And from Samurah ibn Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Do not curse yourselves with Allah's curse, nor with His anger, nor with the Fire.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1976Da'if (Darussalam)
It was narrated by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi, who said: It is a good, authentic hadith.
And from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The believer does not insult the honor of others, nor curse, nor commit Fahishah, nor is he foul.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1977Hasan (Darussalam)
It was narrated by al-Tirmidhi, who said: It is a good hadith.
And from Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When a person curses somebody or something, the curse goes up to heaven and the gates of heaven get closed. Then it comes down to the earth and its gates get closed. Then it turns right and left, and if it does not find an entrance to go anywhere, it returns to the person or thing that was cursed; if he or it deserves to be cursed; otherwise it returns to the person who uttered it.
Riyad as-Salihin 1556
It was narrated by Abu Dawud.
And from Imran ibn al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was on one of his journeys, and a woman from the Ansar was on a she-camel. The camel became agitated, so she cursed it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) heard this and said: "Take what is on her and leave her; for she is cursed." Imran said: "It is as if I see her now walking among the people, and no one bothers her."
It was narrated by Muslim."

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
These are hadiths that al-Nawawi, may Allah have mercy on him, cited in his book *Riyad al-Salihin* regarding the warning against cursing. Among them is the hadith of Samurah ibn Jundub, in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
Do not curse yourselves with Allah's curse, nor with His anger, nor with the Fire.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1976Da'if (Darussalam)

Likewise, the hadith in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
The believer is not one who insults, nor one who curses, nor one who is obscene, nor one who is vulgar.
This indicates that these matters are a deficiency in faith and that they deprive the believer of the reality of faith and the perfection of faith. Thus, he should not be one who insults people by their lineages, their honor, their appearance and demeanor, or their deeds. Nor should he be one whose only concern is cursing, saying, "I curse you, I said such and such, may Allah curse you, why did you say such and such?" Or saying to his children, "May Allah curse you, bring this," or the like. The believer is not one who curses, nor one who is obscene.
The obscene one is the one who is obscene in his speech, by shouting or the like. Nor is he one who is vulgar, who transgresses against others. The believer is a peaceful believer; he has no obscenity in his speech or action or otherwise, because he is a believer.
Likewise, the hadith about the curse: when a person curses someone or something, the curse ascends to the sky, and the doors of the sky are closed against it. Then it descends to the earth, and the doors of the earth are closed against it. Then it goes to the right and to the left, and then it returns to the one who was cursed. If he was deserving of it, he has earned it; otherwise, it returns to the one who uttered it. This is a severe warning for the one who curses someone who does not deserve to be cursed. The curse wanders in the sky and the earth, to the right and to the left, and then it ultimately returns to the one who uttered it if the one cursed was not deserving of it.
Then he mentioned the hadith of Imran ibn al-Husayn about a woman who was on her camel. The camel became agitated, and she was tired and annoyed, so she cursed it, saying, "May Allah curse you." The Prophet heard this; the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) heard this, so he ordered that what was on her, namely the saddle and the luggage, be taken, and that the camel be stripped, meaning the camel, and then left.
He said: "Indeed, I have seen her among the people, and no one bothers her."
Because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that it be left, and this is a matter of discretionary punishment, punishing this woman for cursing an animal that did not deserve to be cursed. For this reason, he said:
Do not accompany us a cursed beast.
Because this woman had cursed it, and the one who is cursed should not be used. Therefore, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited it and left it, and this would be a punishment for the woman who cursed this animal which did not deserve it. And success is from Allah.
