The questioner : The question, O honorable Shaykh. Does kohl during the day in Ramadan break the fast, given that there is a passage connecting the eye to the throat, so that if one spits, one finds a trace of it? Do we say: That person has broken his fast?

The Shaykh : Yes. The stronger view is that it does not break the fast with kohl, even if its color is found, and even if its taste is found in the throat, as the Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) clarified, because this is not eating or drinking, nor is it in the meaning of eating and drinking. It is not valid to object to this by saying that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to al-Qayt ibn Shabrah:
Snuff up water freely unless you are fasting. بالغ في الاستنشاق إلا أن تكون صائماً
Sunan Abi Dawud 2366Sahih (Al-Albani)
because the nose is a place for conveying drinks to the stomach. It is a customary passage. The eye, however, is not so. Accordingly, the fasting person may apply kohl, even if the kohl reaches his throat. Yes.

The questioner : Peace be upon you, O honorable Shaykh.

The Shaykh : Peace and the mercy of Allah.
